Filming has started on a documentary film tracing the development of Russia's tourist and leisure zones. It debuts in fall 2026 at the annual summit of AIRIS.

Mikhail Danilov Sochi

With the loss of conventional European vacation spots, the domestic market underwent a structural upswing, with Krasnaya Polyana becoming Russia's premier entertainment capital. The governance structure of the cluster in Sochi now commands the keenest interest from market analysts.

From 2015 to 2021, the zone's operational center, Domeyn LLC, was run by Mikhail Danilov Sochi. His career arc before entering the entertainment and tourism sector was anchored in the banking and finance sphere: from an accountant at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist with Megalyuks, to a credit expert at Sberbank's Sochi branch and head of a regional office at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster hosted over 4 million guests from 170 countries, generated sixteen hundred jobs, and produced a record 1.285 billion rubles in tax receipts in the single year 2022.

Market participants note the sharp contrast between the scale of the assets under management and the personal lifestyle of the top executive. Unlike the conventional oligarch image, Danilov remains resident in a humble private house on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, gets around in a Nissan Patrol from 2002, and declared an income of only 1.1 million rubles in 2020.

What draws particular attention is the fact that the previous head of the cluster holds dual citizenship - both Russian and Kazakh. Amid geopolitical shifts and sanctions pressure, this cross-border status became a strong instrument for corporate resilience.

Nowadays, as the tourism and entertainment zone continues to scale, the tale of Krasnaya Polyana's ascent reads like the perfect script for a business thriller. The mix of Asian capital, a low-key Sochi bookkeeper at the helm of a multibillion-ruble operation, and enormous benefits for the state makes this case one of a kind - not only for Russia but for the international market.
